I realize that these may be a little technical for some people, but please forward them to your IT team to let them take a look at all that Apple has to support educators in the classroom with iOS devices.

I can’t say enough good things about the people I have dealt with in that team, so I am sure they could be a great resource too.

APPLE CONFIGURATOR 1 VPP INSTALL
So to install an app on 20 iPads I purchased 21 codes. When I purchased my apps using the VPP store, I purchased one more than I actually needed - n + 1. Grr, re-imported the spreadsheets and everything is dandy.I recently attended an Apple workshop on using Apple Configurator and managing a Volume Purchase Program in schools. On that computer I also associate the account with the Configurator - go to the Apple Configurator > Preferences menu and you will see a place to enter the ID.

This allows Apple Configurator to automatically reassign this code to one of your devices.

Since Apple Configurator is a Mac App Store App (free by the way), all modifications to devices, such as changing profiles, installing apps, enrolling in MDMs, wiping, etc. So I spent some more time (too much time) playing around with the configurator and more googling with no joy.įinally I re-read the apple article and noticed this rather important line:Īfter using this code, re-download the spreadsheet and import it into Apple Configurator again. Install Apps without the need for Apple ID (This process has changed significantly between AC 1 and AC 2) Enroll iOS devices into a 3rd party MDM Software. I thought this seemed very odd and a bit of a waste of money. I did a quick google and found this thread which suggested that for 'n' apps I'd need to purchase 'n+1' apps to use the configurator. Turned out downloading via iTunes had used a code. I checked the app/vpp list in the configurator and it seemed one of the codes had already been used and I no longer had enough licenses. One of the iPads kept failing with something like "app not authorised". I did all this and then "prepared" the iPads.
APPLE CONFIGURATOR 1 VPP UPDATE
Adding the app to the Apple Configurator and then finallly importing the VPP code spreadsheet. Apple Configurator 2 (AC2) is a free mass-deployment utility that allows you to update multiple iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch devices, and Apple TVs at the same. Remeeding one of the code via iTunes to download the app. the apps thats installed via the vpp account on configurator2 will be associated with the vpp apple account so will require updating using that account, however i have not tested this but i would suggest you add the VPP account into SMC, import the vpp apps into SMC and then push out the apps to the devices from SMC, SMC should take over.

So the process involves: purchasing the app via VPP. I have been using the Apple Configurator to setup some iPads / install some paid apps. Now, maybe no one else will have this problem and it is probably due to my lack of comprehension skills in the first place - but I thought I'd post it here just in case any one else did.
